Abstract:

This paper will focus on Brandchaft’s journey from the hermeneutics of suspicion, in which every statement of a patient is believed to mean the opposite of what the person consciously intended to say, to the hermeneutics of trust, a phrase introduced by Gadamer. In this approach we embody the dialogic attitude that the other has something to teach us. We look for what is genuine in the words of another and expect to understand the other better, and through the other, ourselves and our shared world. We trust the other to teach us, as we search for meaning together. Levinasian ethics involving an appreciation of infinite responsibility to the other person is the second philosophical touchstone for this introduction to Brandchaft’s psychoanalytic stance.
