Abstract:

This paper considers the ambiguities of disclosure in the intersubjective context of powerful states and state shifts within and between analyst and patient, and the omnipresence of inadvertent communications at both verbal and nonverbal levels. As analysts, we cannot escape those unformulated aspects of our experience and affectivity that are being brought to bear unwittingly on any particular communication in the heat of the clinical moment. The dialectic between what we say and what we actually communicate affectively, and how these so-often discordant communications are received, processed and responded to, in ongoing dialogue, is indeed the crucible of our work. In the context of each therapeutic dyad, we continuously strive to find the words that aptly carry the meanings we wish to convey – the word, the phrase, the metaphor that forms a rhythm from within ourselves and feels resonant in the intersubjective arena. These ideas will be highlighted through the consideration of an analysis of a young woman battling for her life. The clinical material selected highlights the dialectic between familiar articulations and unformulated affectivity. Illustrated here is the struggle to bridge the inherent tension between well-worn words and the emergence of a new co-created linguistic space where words are fired in the kiln of crisis to form shared metaphors that come to serve as crucial touchstones of the complex affective underpinnings of this particular therapeutic relationship.
