Abstract:

This paper focus on Brandchaft’s clinical quest to facilitate the patient’s liberation from the set of self-constricting ways he calls “systems of pathological accommodation”. “Accommodation” refers to the child’s response to relational trauma, which occurs when severe emotional disjunctions repeatedly threaten the child’s attachment bond to his caretaker. When basic security is at risk, many children ensure their safety and maintain the tie by unconsciously sacrificing their own perceptual-emotional reality and adopting that of their attachment partner. This profound (and subtle) relationship-structuring mode has far reaching consequences. Like Bowlby and Ferenczi, Brandchaft believes that some forms of relational trauma infiltrate the entire personality, fatefully recasting modes of thinking, feeling and behaving. Clinical vignettes will illustrate these ideas.
